Loughan House

project information

Loughan House is a correctional facility situated in the picturesque Cavan countryside. As part of this rehabilitation process, the inmates are provided with education programmes. The brief was to provide 250 inmates with an educational facility which not only provided their basic educational requirements similar to a traditional school building but to provide this with safety and security paramount in importance. The brief called for a facility to be built in keeping with the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. Utilising local and natural materials to blend with the countryside was key to settling the buildings into their surroundings.

Traditional classrooms were constructed in keeping with the applicable teacher/student ratios but the quantity of job specific learning environments were increased to meet the facilities rehabilitation programmes. The following multiple technical teaching rooms and associated equipment were provided in line with the facilities teaching programmes; woodwork rooms, metalwork rooms, building skills, industrial cleaning, light industrial, music rooms, Science labs, home economics & art rooms.

The external spaces were landscaped in keeping with its surroundings and a state-of-the-art astroturf training pitch, with associated car park was also provided.
